Instructions. Like. Some speakers use 'like' very frequently. Listen to this story told by Saoirse Ronan and type what you hear. Sometimes you'll hear just the word 'like', and sometimes you'll hear expressions with 'like', e.g. 'he was like'.
The word 'like' has a lot of different meanings. Here are some of its meanings:
- we use 'like' to report what we said or thought (e.g. 'I was like, what???')
- we sometimes use it as a 'filler' word when we're thinking what to say next (e.g. 'It was, like, a very difficult choice.')
- 'like' can mean 'not exactly', e.g. 'It was, like, brown or dark yellow.'
